OPTION THREE: NEW ZOOM WRITING CLASSES - Wildly Popular

Creative Writing - 2/3rd graders

A fun, playful exploration of tools used to write descriptively. Students will explore "showing vs telling" with techniques like snapshots, thought shots, sensory details, and exploding a moment. As time allows, we will explore story telling basics using character development and building around a climax.  Students collaborate in break out groups almost daily with the instructor dropping  in to check for understanding . This also allows for students to develop personal connections with the teacher and others in the class.Supplies needed for each week will be emailed on the weekend  and families can email uploaded work on Fridays for teacher feedback.

Creative Writing - 4th/5th graders

A similar exploration of tools to use to write descriptively as for younger students with more sophisticated applications.

Essay Writing Concepts - 2nd/3rd graders

Seventy percent of success in learning expository writing is having the conceptual
understanding of the relationship of main ideas to subordinate details. This class provides multiple opportunities to develop these skills using hands on methods.  Most student's reading comprehension skills improve in this class as they develop a sense of underlying structures of expository texts.  We will be doing a lot of color coding, cutting and pasting, and role playing to make this an engaging and very practical class.  Students collaborate in break out groups almost daily with the instructor dropping  in to check for understanding . This also allows for students to develop personal connections with the teacher and others in the class.  Supplies needed for each week will be emailed on the weekend  and families can email uploaded work on Fridays for teacher feedback.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Marielle Cammarata, one of the owners of Onstage - Kids N Dance, is a former sixth grade English teacher and Homeschooling Writing Workshop Leader for elementary school students. As a Bay Area School Reform team leader she helped reform writing instruction in San Leandro Unified School District to help reduce the achievement gap.

She has non-traditional methods for teaching writing. There is A LOT of time spent front loading concepts: categorizing and analyzing samples, playing with skills, making dances to remember concepts, role playing, and playing games.  Students gain a solid foundation in fundamental skills with all of this scaffolding so that the actually writing part becomes so much easier and there are specific tools to grab when they feel stuck.

ONLINE CLASS FAQ:

When will we get the zoom link for the class? At least by the day before the class. If you are not sure if we have the correct email to send the zoom link, please email us the one you would like us to use.

How do I use Zoom? Zoom is a very user platform for classes. If you click on the link, just follow the directions.

What if I am having problems getting into the zoom class? Text the number provided to you at the time the link is emailed

How do I take advantage of enrolling in my FREE second class? You will be emailed an invitation. Respond to that invitation and we will register you manually.

Will the free second class apply after classes return to normal? No. These are a gift to you for supporting us during the crisis period when we can't teach in person.

What if I enrolled in spring classes before the Covid crisis and don't want to take advantage of on line classes? Email us to freeze your enrollment.  Classes in your session only after the notice was provided will be available for future use.

THANK YOU We want to thank you in advance for choosing to still take advantage of our classes during this challenging time.  Every registration helps us out.  We recognize that on-line classes are not the same as in-person classes.  As a way to compensate for this, we are offering a FREE, second, on-line class for every class that you register for.  So, if you are enrolled in a Monday dance class for the session, you can also enroll in another class on another day for the full session.
